Providence Eye & Laser Specialists: A Family-Run Business

In 1988 when Dr. Mozayeni was dating his then college sweetheart, now wife, neither of them had any idea that they would someday be small business owners of a successful LASIK eye center in Charlotte, North Carolina. As Dr. Seuss would say “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”. So, how did they get here and when did they open Providence Eye & Laser Specialists?

Dr. Mozayeni and his wife Kristen have not always been business owners. In fact, for the first 10 years of their marriage, their professions could not have been more different. Dr. Mozayeni was finishing his ophthalmology residency at Albany Medical Center in New York, followed by his cornea fellowship at University of Minnesota. He landed his first “real” job as a Cornea Specialist at Albany Medical Center. Meanwhile, Kristen launched her career in telecommunications sales & marketing at AT&T. Working for such a large corporation provided Kristen with incredible training and experience, as well as flexibility to move around the country during Dr. Mozayeni’s training years.

New LASIK Eye Center in Town!

In 2003 a new family-owned business was born in Charlotte, NC. Providence Eye is the brainchild of Dr. Mozayeni. After not feeling like he was able to provide the medical care and patient experience he wanted to while working for a large corporate LASIK eye center, he decided it was time to open his own premier LASIK practice.

It was perfect timing for Kristen to get involved in a new project as two years prior she left her 12-year telecommunications career to be a stay-at-home mom, but she was beginning to get a little bored. Helping her husband build a local, professional, reputable brand was right up Kristen’s alley!

We saw our first new patient at Providence Eye on March 4, 2003. The early days were long and believe it or not, pretty boring at times. Attracting new patients to our new LASIK eye center was not easy. This is no Field of Dreams “build it and they will come” example. We only had a few patients, lunch breaks that were too long and many ongoing details and growing pains that needed to be managed.

Providence Eye: 15 Years Later

Fast forward 15 years and a lot has changed! Here are a few remarkable highlights:

• Today, Providence Eye is pleased to employee 16 people, including two optometrists, in our South Charlotte office – all from the Charlotte metro area.
• The practice logo looks a little different now. We like to say it got a facelift!
• At two different times, we acquired additional space for our office.
• We totally redecorated our office.
• In April 2015, we closed to complete a major office renovation.
• Our website has been redesigned and updated three times.
• Our lasers have been upgraded multiple times.
• Kristen, who originally worked about six hours per week, now works much closer to 40 hours per week.
