What Happens During Post-Mohs Reconstruction Surgery?

Dr. Chen will determine the plan that best suits your personal situation. One of two types of procedures will be performed:

  • Flap surgery using tissue from a surrounding area to reconstruct the surgical site. The blood supply is kept intact or reattached, if necessary, to fill in the area of tissue loss.
  • Skin grafting. This involves taking skin from other areas of the body to build up/reconstruct the treated area.

Depending on the complexity of your procedure Dr. Chen will advise you of the following details:

  • Location - Providence Eye office or The Surgery Center at Edgewater
  • Anesthesia - local, IV sedation or general.

Preparing for Post-Mohs Reconstruction Surgery

Here are some general tips to promote a successful procedure:

  • Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before (and after) your surgery.
  • Do not eat anything the morning of your surgery.
  • Do not wear makeup the day of your procedure.
  • Have someone drive you home after your appointment.
  • You may want to have someone spend the night with you in case you have any questions or experience any complications.
  • Depending on what procedure is done, a patch may or may not be placed. This may remain in place anywhere from overnight to up to 1 week.

You will be provided detailed instructions in writing by Dr. Chen and her team prior to your procedure.
