LASIK is a two step procedure where a flap of corneal tissue is created then the underlying tissue is reshaped with a laser. Intra-LASIK is when the flap is made with a laser instead of a blade. Intra-LASIK has proven itself to be safer and more precise. It is also known as I-LASIK and Z-LASIK depending on who manufactures the laser. Dr. Mozayeni introduced Allegretto Intra-LASIK to the Charlotte metro area in 2004 and is still the only cornea specialist to offer this technology in the region. His experience with this technology far exceeds any other surgeon in the area.
The lasers used to reshape the cornea have gone through several generations of upgrades and with the introduction of "Wavefront" technology in May of 2003. These Wavefront guided lasers have been promoted as the "customized" approach to reshaping the cornea. Yes, the results have been very good, and in some cases better than non-wavefront treatments for specific patients. However, not everyone qualifies for this approach because of FDA limits, and because of limitations in the technology.
There are currently several FDA approved "wavefront guided" lasers, all of which are brand names of the same technology. All of these lasers also reshape the cornea the same way; by utilizing specific light processing data (wavefront mapping). Although this approach works well for many people, it may not be ideal for everyone. Sometimes it can lead to less than ideal quality of vision including such things as halos, glare, and ghosting of vision.
The Allegretto laser specifically addresses the shortcomings of other lasers by maintaining the natural shape of the cornea for most patients. This can lead to better quality of vision for many candidates. In addition the Allegretto has the most sophisticated eye tracker and is the fastest laser available in the world, thereby improving the likelihood of an excellent outcome. The Allegretto is FDA approved for virtually all corrections including farsightedness, nearsightedness, and large amounts of astigmatism.
Dr. Mozayeni was the first to offer Allegretto IntraLASIK in the Charlotte region, and is still the only cornea specialist to offer it. His experience with this technology far exceeds any other surgeon in the area.
